      Album Details

Stephen Kovacevich, a name synonymous with virtuosity and depth in the classical piano world, presents a captivating album featuring two masterpieces of the 20th-century repertoire. Released on January 1, 1969, under the Decca Music Group Ltd. label, this album showcases Kovacevich's extraordinary technical prowess and interpretive sensitivity.

The album opens with Stravinsky's Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, a work that challenges the pianist with its intricate rhythms and stark contrasts. Kovacevich navigates these complexities with aplomb, offering a performance that is both precise and expressive. The concerto's three movements—Largo - Allegro - Più mosso - Maestoso, Largo, and Allegro—are rendered with a keen sense of drama and nuance, highlighting Kovacevich's ability to bring out the unique character of each section.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 2, BB 101, Sz. 95. This concerto, known for its technical demands and rich harmonic language, is a testament to Kovacevich's mastery. The three movements—Allegro, Adagio - Più adagio - Presto, and Allegro molto—are performed with a blend of power and delicacy, showcasing Kovacevich's ability to handle both the virtuosic passages and the more introspective moments with equal finesse.

With a total duration of 48 minutes, this album is a compact yet comprehensive exploration of two significant works in the classical piano repertoire. Kovacevich's performances are not just technically impressive but also deeply musical, offering listeners a profound and engaging experience. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.
