Stanford: Complete Works for Cello & Orchestra - Charles Villiers Stanford

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, romantic soundscapes of Charles Villiers Stanford's "Complete Works for Cello & Orchestra," a captivating collection of the composer's lesser-known but equally compelling orchestral works. This album, released on September 26, 2011, under the Hyperion label, is the third volume in the "Romantic Cello Concerto" series, offering a unique perspective on Stanford's exceptional understanding of the relationship between soloist and orchestra.

The album features seven tracks, including the sweeping "Cello Concerto in D Minor," the serene "Ballata and Ballabile," and the lively "Irish Rhapsody No. 3." Each piece is a testament to Stanford's finely crafted compositions, showcasing his ability to create invigorating and lovely music within the traditional boundaries of classical music.

Performed by the talented Gemma Rosefield on cello, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by Andrew Manze, this album was recorded in January 2011 at the City Halls in Glasgow. The result is a stunning 70-minute journey through Stanford's complete music for cello and orchestra, presented in a standard jewel case with a 16-page booklet.

While Charles Villiers Stanford is far better known for his choral music, this disc of rarities reveals his original orchestral voice, making it a valuable addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection. Whether you're a longtime fan of Stanford's work or a newcomer to his compositions, this album offers a fresh and engaging exploration of his musical genius.
