      About Paul Gonsalves

      Paul Gonsalves, born in Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1920, was a dynamic and influential American jazz tenor saxophonist, renowned for his powerful and emotive playing. His career took a significant turn when he joined Duke Ellington's orchestra in 1950, becoming a pivotal member of the band. Gonsalves' most famous moment came at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, where his electrifying 27-chorus solo in the middle of Ellington's "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" revitalized Ellington's career and cemented Gonsalves' place in jazz history.
