      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of early Romantic music with Louis Spohr's "Violin Concertos Nos. 2 & 5." This exquisite album, released on July 1, 2013, under the CPO label, features the renowned violinist Ulf Hoelscher, accompanied by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, conducted by Christian Fröhlich. Spohr, a prolific composer of the early 19th century, showcases his lyrical elegance and masterful craftsmanship in these two concertos, composed between 1808 and 1825.

The album opens with the Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 2, a work that beautifully balances intensity and grace. The first movement, "Allegro moderato," sets a dramatic tone, followed by the serene "Adagio" and the lively "Alla Polacca." The second half of the album presents the Violin Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major, Op. 17, a more expansive and lyrical work. The "Allegro moderato" first movement is followed by the deeply expressive "Adagio ma non troppo" and concludes with a spirited "Rondo (Allegretto)."

Spohr's violin concertos are a testament to his innovative spirit and technical prowess. This album offers a compelling introduction to his works, particularly for those who have already explored his Violin Concerto No. 8 and are eager to discover more. With a total duration of 49 minutes, "Violin Concertos Nos. 2 & 5" is a rich and rewarding listening experience that highlights the beauty and depth of Spohr's contributions to the violin concerto repertoire.

      About Louis Spohr

Louis Spohr, born Ludwig Spohr, was a prolific and innovative figure in the early Romantic period, renowned for his contributions as a composer, violinist, and conductor. Born in Brunswick, Germany, in 1784, Spohr's musical journey began at a young age, showcasing his talent on the violin. By the age of 18, he had already made significant strides, joining the ducal orchestra and later establishing himself as a virtuoso violinist. Spohr's compositions span a wide range of genres, including ten symphonies, ten operas, eighteen violin concerti, and numerous chamber works. His innovative spirit led him to invent the violin chinrest and the orchestral rehearsal mark, revolutionizing violin technique and teaching in the 19th century. Despite his extensive output, only a few of his works, such as the Octet Op. 32 and the Nonet Op. 31, are frequently performed today. Spohr's legacy endures through his meticulously crafted music and his enduring influence on the development of nineteenth-century music.
