      Album Details

This album, released on April 7, 2015, under the CPO label, offers a rich and diverse exploration of Spohr's compositional genius, spanning a total of 70 minutes.

The album features two of Spohr's most celebrated symphonies: the Symphony No. 7 in C Major, Op. 121, subtitled "Irdisches und Göttliches im Menschenleben" (Earthly and Divine in Human Life), and the Symphony No. 9 in B Minor, Op. 143, titled "Die Jahreszeiten" (The Seasons). Each symphony is a journey in itself, with distinct movements that evoke a range of emotions and imagery. The Symphony No. 7, with its three movements, explores the human condition, while the Symphony No. 9, with its four movements, paints a vivid picture of the changing seasons.

In addition to these symphonies, the album also includes "Erinnerung an Marienbad, Op. 89," a delightful waltz for small orchestra that adds a touch of elegance and charm to the collection. The NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, conducted by Howard Griffiths, brings these works to life with their impeccable musicianship and deep understanding of Spohr's style.

      About Louis Spohr

Louis Spohr, born Ludwig Spohr, was a prolific and innovative figure in the early Romantic period, renowned for his contributions as a composer, violinist, and conductor. Born in Brunswick, Germany, in 1784, Spohr's musical journey began at a young age, showcasing his talent on the violin. By the age of 18, he had already made significant strides, joining the ducal orchestra and later establishing himself as a virtuoso violinist. Spohr's compositions span a wide range of genres, including ten symphonies, ten operas, eighteen violin concerti, and numerous chamber works. His innovative spirit led him to invent the violin chinrest and the orchestral rehearsal mark, revolutionizing violin technique and teaching in the 19th century. Despite his extensive output, only a few of his works, such as the Octet Op. 32 and the Nonet Op. 31, are frequently performed today. Spohr's legacy endures through his meticulously crafted music and his enduring influence on the development of nineteenth-century music.
