Spanish Guitar Music of Five Centuries, Vol. 1 - Narciso Yepes

      Album Details

Narciso Yepes, the renowned Spanish classical guitarist, presents a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of Spanish guitar music with his album "Spanish Guitar Music of Five Centuries, Vol. 1." Released on February 1, 1968, under the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, this album is a testament to Yepes' virtuosity and his deep connection to his country's musical heritage.

Spanning a duration of 53 minutes, the album is a meticulously curated collection that showcases the evolution of Spanish guitar music over five centuries. It begins with "Fantasía X" and "Pavanas Nos. 1-6," pieces that reflect the intricate and elegant styles of the Renaissance period. Yepes' interpretation of "Canción I, del Emperador (Mille Regretz de Josquin)" is a highlight, demonstrating his ability to infuse historical pieces with a fresh and personal touch.

The album also features variations on traditional Spanish themes, such as "Variations on 'Guárdame las vacas'" and "Folias," which Yepes performs with a sensitivity that highlights the melodies' timeless appeal. His arrangements of keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, originally composed for harpsichord, are particularly noteworthy. These include "Keyboard Sonata in C Major, R. 60" and "Keyboard Sonata in D Major, R. 92," both masterfully adapted for the guitar by Yepes himself.

Dance pieces like "Gallarda y Villano" and "Zarabanda al ayre espanol" showcase Yepes' technical prowess and his ability to bring rhythm and vitality to these historical compositions. The album concludes with "Canarios," a lively and energetic piece that leaves the listener with a sense of the guitar's enduring popularity and versatility.

"Spanish Guitar Music of Five Centuries, Vol. 1" is not just a collection of pieces but a celebration of the guitar's role in Spanish music. Narciso Yepes' performances are marked by his distinctive tone, precise articulation, and deep musicality, making this album a treasure trove for both classical music enthusiasts and those new to the genre.

      About Narciso Yepes

Narciso Yepes, born in 1927 in Lorca, Spain, was a virtuoso classical guitarist whose name is synonymous with mastery and innovation. Often ranked second only to Andrés Segovia, Yepes' career was marked by his exceptional technique and his invention of the ten-string guitar, which he premiered with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1964. His rendition of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" became legendary, earning him international acclaim and a devoted following. Beyond his performances, Yepes was a scholar who rediscovered and transcribed numerous works, including lute pieces by Bach. His influence extended to film soundtracks, and in the 1980s, he formed the Trio Yepes with his children, blending music and dance. Yepes' legacy endures as one of the most outstanding guitarists in classical music history, celebrated for his artistry and contributions to the instrument's repertoire.
