      Album Details

Bill Keith's 1976 album "Something Auld, Something Newgrass, Something Borrowed, Something Bluegrass" is a captivating blend of traditional bluegrass and innovative newgrass, showcasing Keith's mastery of the banjo. Released on the Rounder label, this 12-track collection spans a mere 35 minutes, yet it's packed with vibrant energy and musical prowess.

The album kicks off with a surprising cover of the Rolling Stones' "No Expectations," setting the tone for Keith's unique approach to bluegrass. He seamlessly weaves together traditional tunes like "Green Mountain Hop" and "Auld Lang Syne" with original compositions such as "Pain In My Heart" and "Jordu." The tracklist also includes a cover of "Caravan," originally by Bill Keith's Caravan.

Keith's virtuosic banjo playing takes center stage, but he's also backed by a stellar supporting cast, creating a rich, dynamic sound that's both nostalgic and fresh. The album's title reflects its diverse content, drawing from old and new influences, borrowing from other genres, and staying true to bluegrass roots.

Whether you're a bluegrass purist or a fan of innovative newgrass, this album offers a delightful exploration of Bill Keith's musical versatility. It's a testament to his skill and creativity, making it a standout release in the genre.

      About Bill Keith

Bill Keith, born William Bradford Keith on December 20, 1939, in Boston, Massachusetts, was a pioneering five-string banjoist whose innovative playing style left an indelible mark on bluegrass and newgrass music. With a career spanning over four decades, Keith's influence on the banjo is often compared to that of the genre's founder, Bill Monroe. His unique picking style, informally named after him, pushed the boundaries of the instrument and inspired countless musicians. Keith's collaborations with notable artists like Bill Monroe, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Ian and Sylvia, and Judy Collins further cemented his legacy. Until his passing on October 23, 2015, Keith remained a beloved figure in the music world, continually evolving and inspiring generations of banjo players.
