      Solstice - Ralph Towner

      Album Details

Ralph Towner's seminal album, Solstice, is a masterclass in jazz fusion, weaving together intricate textures and melodies that showcase the guitarist's unique compositional style. Recorded in December 1974 at Arne Bendiksen Studio in Oslo, this iconic release brings together a talented quartet, featuring Towner on 12-string and classical guitars, as well as piano, alongside Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano saxophones and flute, Eberhard Weber on bass and cello, and Jon Christensen on drums and percussion.

Produced by the esteemed Manfred Eicher, Solstice is a landmark recording that marked one of Towner's first collaborations with European musicians, resulting in a distinctive sound that is both haunting and beautiful. The album's eight tracks, including 'Oceanus', 'Visitation', 'Drifting Petals', and the titular 'Winter Solstice', demonstrate a remarkable range and depth, from the placid to the dissonant, making for a diverse and dynamic listening experience.

With its release on ECM Records in 1975, Solstice has become a beloved classic among jazz enthusiasts, and its influence can still be felt today. This 40-minute journey is a testament to Towner's innovative spirit and his ability to craft music that is both timeless and thought-provoking. As a work of jazz fusion, Solstice remains an essential listen, offering a rich and rewarding experience that will continue to inspire and delight audiences for years to come.
