      Album Details

Dive into the captivating world of Ethel Smyth with her compelling collection of chamber music and songs, presented in "Smyth: Kammermusik and Lieder, Vol. 4." Released on January 1, 1997, by Troubadisc, this album offers a rich tapestry of compositions that showcase Smyth's versatility and depth as a composer.

The album begins with a series of Lieder, or art songs, from Op. 4 and Op. 3, each piece a miniature masterpiece that blends poetry and music seamlessly. From the playful "Tanzlied" to the introspective "Nachtgedanken," these songs reveal Smyth's ability to convey a wide range of emotions and narratives through her music.

The centerpiece of the album is the powerful Cello Sonata in C Minor, a work that demands both technical prowess and emotional depth from its performers. The sonata's four movements take the listener on a journey from the fiery passion of the opening Allegro appassionato to the serene beauty of the Andante, culminating in the exhilarating Allegro con fuoco.

The album concludes with "3 Moods of the Sea," a trio of pieces that evoke the ever-changing nature of the ocean. From the calm of "Requies" to the stormy intensity of "Before the Squall," and the tranquil beauty of "After Sunset," these pieces offer a fitting finale to an album that is as diverse as it is engaging.

With a total duration of just over an hour, this album is a testament to Ethel Smyth's enduring legacy as a composer. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer to the genre, "Smyth: Kammermusik and Lieder, Vol. 4" is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Ethel Smyth

Ethel Smyth was a trailblazing English composer and suffragist whose indomitable spirit and musical prowess left an indelible mark on the early 20th century. Born in 1858, Smyth defied the societal norms of her time, forging a remarkable career as one of the most accomplished female composers in a male-dominated environment. Her compositions span a wide range, including songs, piano works, chamber music, orchestral pieces, choral works, and operas. Among her most notable works is 'The March of the Women,' an anthem for the women's suffrage movement, and the opera 'The Wreckers.' Smyth's fierce independence and political activism were as legendary as her music. A close friend of Emmeline Pankhurst, she was a lifelong disruptor, fighting for women's rights and demanding recognition for her complex and compelling compositions. Her body of work and her personal story continue to inspire, making Ethel Smyth a true icon of musical and social progress.
