      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich orchestral tapestry of Jean Sibelius's early works with the highly anticipated release, "Sibelius: Karelia Suite, Rakastava & Lemminkäinen." This album, set to release on February 2, 2024, under the BIS label, brings together three of Sibelius's most captivating compositions, each a testament to his enduring genius and his deep connection to Finnish heritage.

The Karelia Suite, Op. 11, opens the album with its three movements, each a vivid portrayal of the history and culture of the Karelia region. From the moderate intermezzo to the menuetto-tempo ballade and the march-like moderato, this suite is a journey through the landscapes and legends of Finland.

Following the Karelia Suite is Rakastava, Op. 14, a three-movement work that translates to "The Lover." This piece is a delicate exploration of love and longing, with each movement painting a different shade of this complex emotion.

The album concludes with Lemminkäinen, Op. 22, a four-movement suite based on the Finnish epic poem, the Kalevala. This work is a dramatic retelling of the adventures of the legendary figure Lemminkäinen, from his encounters with the maidens of the island to his journey to the underworld, Tuonela, and his triumphant return.

Under the direction of the acclaimed conductor Susanna Mälkki and performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, this album is a masterclass in orchestral interpretation. The performances are nuanced and poised, highlighting the exceptional quality of both the compositions and the musicians. Whether you're a longtime fan of Sibelius or a newcomer to his music, this album offers a compelling exploration of some of his most significant early works.
