      About Symphony Of The Air

The Symphony of the Air, active from 1954 to 1963, was a distinguished ensemble born from the remnants of the renowned NBC Symphony Orchestra. Founded by former members of the NBC Symphony after its disbandment, this orchestra was a powerhouse of musical talent, with a significant portion of its members being veteran NBC Symphony musicians. Under the baton of the illustrious Leopold Stokowski, who served as musical director from 1955 onwards, the Symphony of the Air achieved both financial and artistic success.

The orchestra is celebrated for its groundbreaking work, including the celebrated Omnibus TV programme that featured Beethoven's discarded ideas for his Fifth Symphony. Their repertoire spanned a wide range of classical masterpieces, from Beethoven and Dvořák to lesser-known works like Hovhaness's Symphony No. 3. The Symphony of the Air's performances were not limited to the concert hall; they embarked on a triumphant State Department-backed Asian tour and a summer season in the Catskills, drawing massive audiences. Their recordings, many of which were made at Carnegie Hall, continue to be cherished by classical music enthusiasts worldwide. The Symphony of the Air's legacy endures as a testament to the enduring power of classical music and the brilliance of its talented musicians.
