      Album Details

Dive into the enchanting world of Bright Sheng's "Flute Moon / China Dreams / Postcards," a captivating album that seamlessly blends traditional Chinese influences with contemporary classical music. Released on June 30, 2000, under the BIS label, this album is a testament to Sheng's unique compositional voice and his ability to evoke vivid imagery through sound.

The album opens with "Flute Moon," a two-part suite that showcases the exquisite playing of Sharon Bezaly on the flute and piccolo. The first part, "Chi Lin's Dance," is a lively and rhythmic piece inspired by the mythical Chi Lin creature, while the second part, "Flute Moon," is a serene and introspective exploration of the moon's reflection on water. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lan Shui, provides a rich and nuanced backdrop for Bezaly's virtuosic performances.

"China Dreams" is a four-part suite that draws inspiration from Chinese folklore and landscape. The suite begins with a haunting "Prelude" that sets the stage for the "Fanfare" that follows. "The Stream Flows" is a delicate and evocative piece that captures the gentle movement of water, while the "Finale" brings the suite to a triumphant close.

The album concludes with "Postcards," a four-part suite that offers a series of musical snapshots from different landscapes. "From the Mountains" is a sweeping and dramatic piece that captures the majesty of the natural world, while "From the River Valley" is a more introspective and reflective piece. "From the Savage Land" is a wild and untamed piece that captures the raw power of nature, and "Wish You Were Here" is a poignant and nostalgic piece that brings the album to a close.

Throughout the album, Sheng's compositions are brought to life by the exceptional performances of Sharon Bezaly, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and Lan Shui. The album's 59-minute duration is filled with a diverse range of musical styles and influences, making it a rich and rewarding listening experience. Whether you're a fan of classical music or simply looking to explore something new, "Flute Moon / China Dreams / Postcards" is sure to captivate and inspire.
