      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Russian musical tradition with "Shchedrin: Music for Cello and Piano," a captivating album featuring the compositions of the renowned Rodion Shchedrin. Released on September 1, 2008, under Nimbus Records, this album is a testament to Shchedrin's virtuosity as both a composer and a pianist, showcasing his mastery of traditional music genres.

The album opens with "The Ancient Melodies of Russian Folk-Songs," a five-movement suite that beautifully captures the essence of Russian folk music. Each movement, from the contemplative "Lento in poco rubato" to the lively "Allegro, ma non troppo," offers a unique glimpse into the soul of Russian folklore. Following this, the "Sonata for Cello and Piano" presents a more intimate and reflective journey, with its three movements ranging from the delicate "Allegretto" to the profound "Sostenuto assai."

The album also includes the enchanting "In the Style of Albéniz," a piece that pays homage to the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz, and "Nicht nur liebe: Quadrille," a lively quadrille from Shchedrin's opera. The performances by Raphael Wallfisch on cello and Rodion Shchedrin on piano are nothing short of breathtaking, bringing each note to life with precision and passion.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 3 minutes, this album is a treasure trove of musical brilliance. Whether you are a fan of classical music, traditional folk tunes, or simply appreciate the artistry of a master composer, "Shchedrin: Music for Cello and Piano" is an album that will leave you enchanted and inspired.

      About Rodion Shchedrin

Rodion Konstantinovich Shchedrin, born in 1932 in Moscow, is a renowned composer and pianist whose musical journey began in the heart of a musical family. His father, a composer and music theory teacher, laid the foundation for Shchedrin's deep-rooted passion for music. Shchedrin's early works are noted for their tonal qualities and vivid, almost cinematic, illustrations. His career has been marked by numerous accolades, including the USSR State Prize in 1972, the Lenin Prize in 1984, and the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1992.
