      Album Details

Dive into the rich tapestry of traditional music with Rodion Shchedrin's captivating album, released on April 27, 2010, under the Naxos label. This collection, spanning 58 minutes, showcases Shchedrin's mastery of orchestral composition with two concertos and a unique instrumental piece. The album opens with "Concerto for Orchestra No. 4, 'Khorovodi' (Round Dances)," a lively and rhythmic exploration of traditional Russian folk dances. Following this, "Concerto for Orchestra No. 5, '4 Russian Songs'" offers a melodic journey through four classic Russian songs, beautifully arranged for the orchestra. The album concludes with "Khrustal'niye gusli (the Crystal Gusli)," a delicate and ethereal piece inspired by the ancient Russian string instrument, the gusli. Performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Kirill Karabits, this album is a testament to Shchedrin's breadth of style and his deep connection to Russian musical heritage. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Rodion Shchedrin

Rodion Konstantinovich Shchedrin, born in 1932 in Moscow, is a renowned composer and pianist whose musical journey began in the heart of a musical family. His father, a composer and music theory teacher, laid the foundation for Shchedrin's deep-rooted passion for music. Shchedrin's early works are noted for their tonal qualities and vivid, almost cinematic, illustrations. His career has been marked by numerous accolades, including the USSR State Prize in 1972, the Lenin Prize in 1984, and the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1992. Inspired by the likes of Dmitri Shostakovich, Shchedrin has carved out his own distinctive path, becoming one of the most prominent figures to emerge from the Soviet Union's rich musical landscape. Beyond his compositions, Shchedrin is also celebrated for his virtuoso piano skills, making him a full-blooded musician in every sense. His works, spanning various genres, continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
