      Album Details

Booker Ervin's 'Setting The Pace' is a captivating jazz album that showcases the saxophonist's exceptional talent, alongside the equally impressive Dexter Gordon. Recorded in Munich, Germany, in 1965, this album features a stellar lineup, including Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums. The result is a hard-bop masterpiece, with bebop influences, that will leave you enthralled.

The album's four tracks, including the marathon versions of 'Setting The Pace' and 'Dexter's Deck', demonstrate the remarkable chemistry between Ervin and Gordon, as they engage in a thrilling battle of saxophone virtuosity. With 'The Trance' and 'Speak Low' completing the tracklist, this album is a must-listen for jazz enthusiasts. Although Gordon delivers a strong performance, Ervin's innovative and occasionally avant-garde playing style takes centre stage, making this album a testament to his skill and artistry.

Originally released on the Prestige label, 'Setting The Pace' has been re-released in various formats, including a 1993 edition. With its unique blend of hard-bop and bebop, this album is a standout in Booker Ervin's discography, and its influence can be heard in the work of other notable jazz musicians. If you're a fan of jazz, or just discovering the genre, 'Setting The Pace' is an essential listen, offering a glimpse into the exciting world of 1960s jazz and the exceptional talent of Booker Ervin.

      About Booker Ervin

Booker Ervin was a powerhouse tenor saxophonist whose distinctive, hard-edged tone and emotionally charged playing left an indelible mark on the jazz world. Born in Denison, Texas, Ervin initially played trombone before teaching himself the saxophone while serving in the Air Force. His unique style, characterized by a bold, passionate sound and a deep-rooted connection to the blues and gospel, set him apart in the jazz landscape. Ervin is perhaps best known for his collaborations with bassist Charles Mingus, but his own albums, such as "The Freedom Book" and "The Book Cooks," showcase his innovative approach to hard bop and avant-garde jazz. Despite his career being cut short by his untimely death at the age of 39, Ervin's contributions to jazz continue to inspire and influence musicians and fans alike. His music is a testament to the power of emotional depth and the enduring legacy of the blues in jazz.
