Schumann, Ferguson & Others: Piano Works - Myra Hess

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical piano mastery with Myra Hess's "Schumann, Ferguson & Others: Piano Works." Released in 1994 under Biddulph Recordings, this album is a testament to Hess's virtuosity and her deep connection with the compositions she performs. Spanning a diverse repertoire, the album features works by Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Howard Ferguson, and even a touch of Bach, offering a rich tapestry of musical styles and periods.

The album opens with Schumann's iconic "Carnaval, Op. 9," a suite of character pieces that showcase Hess's ability to convey a range of emotions and narratives through her playing. Each movement, from the playful "Pierrot" to the introspective "Eusebius," is rendered with clarity and nuance. Hess's interpretation brings out the whimsical and profound aspects of Schumann's music, making it a highlight of the album.

Beyond Schumann, Hess delves into the intricate and expressive works of Johannes Brahms. Pieces like the "7 Fantasien, Op. 116" and "4 Klavierstücke, Op. 119" demonstrate her technical prowess and her ability to navigate Brahms's complex harmonies and rhythms with ease. The album also includes excerpts from Brahms's "8 Klavierstücke, Op. 76," where Hess's delicate touch and dynamic control shine.

Howard Ferguson's "Stray Fancies, Op. 22" adds a modern touch to the album, showcasing Hess's versatility as a pianist. Her performance of Ferguson's work is both sensitive and precise, highlighting the composer's unique voice. The inclusion of Bach's "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147: No. 10, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" provides a serene and uplifting contrast to the more intricate and demanding pieces on the album.

Myra Hess's rendition of the "Piano Sonata in F Minor, Op. 8" by an unnamed composer is a standout feature. Her interpretation is both powerful and introspective, capturing the depth and complexity of the sonata's three movements. The album concludes with this sonata, leaving the listener with a sense of fulfillment and musical satisfaction.

With a duration of 1 hour and 16 minutes, "Schumann, Ferguson & Others: Piano Works" is a comprehensive exploration of the piano repertoire. Myra Hess's performances are marked by her technical brilliance, emotional depth, and a keen sense of musical storytelling. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Myra Hess

Dame Julia Myra Hess, DBE (1890-1965), was an English pianist celebrated for her profound interpretations of classical masterworks. Born into an affluent Jewish family in Hampstead, Myra Hess began her musical journey at a tender age, becoming the youngest recipient of a certificate from the Trinity College of Music at just seven years old. Her career spanned decades, marked by her exquisite performances of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, earning her international acclaim.

Hess is perhaps best remembered for her heroic efforts during World War II, when she organized and performed in over 2,000 lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery in London.
