      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with Leonard Rose's captivating album, "Schumann: Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129 & Bloch: Schelomo." This exquisite collection, released on Sony Classical, showcases the unparalleled artistry of the legendary cellist Leonard Rose, accompanied by the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra under the batons of Leonard Bernstein and Eugene Ormandy.

The album features two masterful works: Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129, and Ernest Bloch's Hebraic Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra, "Schelomo." Schumann's concerto, composed in a mere two weeks, is a testament to his genius and remains a cornerstone of the cello repertoire. Bloch's "Schelomo," a deeply expressive and evocative piece, offers a profound exploration of Jewish identity and spirituality.

With a total runtime of 45 minutes, this album is a concise yet powerful journey through the depths of classical music. The three movements of Schumann's concerto—"Nicht zu schnell," "Langsam," and "Sehr lebhaft"—are performed with exquisite precision and emotional depth, while "Schelomo" unfolds as a sweeping, dramatic narrative.

Leonard Rose, a revered figure in the world of classical music, brings his unmatched technical skill and profound musicality to these performances. His collaboration with Bernstein and Ormandy, two of the most celebrated conductors of the 20th century, results in a recording that is both historically significant and timeless in its appeal.

Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The combination of Rose's virtuosity, the orchestral brilliance of the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the enduring compositions of Schumann and Bloch make this a collection that will resonate with listeners for years to come.

      About Leonard Rose

Leonard Rose, the celebrated American cellist and pedagogue, left an indelible mark on the world of classical and chamber music. Born into a Russian immigrant family in Washington, D.C., in 1918, Rose's musical journey was nurtured by his amateur cellist father. His velvety tone and complete mastery of the bow arm made him a consummate performer, while his kindness and generosity endeared him to colleagues and students alike. Rose's collaborations, notably with pianist Eugene Istomin, produced acclaimed recordings, including the complete trios of Ludwig van Beethoven. Before his untimely death in 1984, Rose served as a section cellist of the NBC Symphony, cementing his legacy as one of the finest American musicians and teachers of the 20th century.
