Schulhoff: Symphonies Nos. 2 and 5 & Piano Concerto - Erwin Schulhoff

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich and diverse musical world of Erwin Schulhoff with this captivating album, released on January 18, 2019, under the CapriccioNR label. Spanning a generous 4 hours and 10 minutes, this collection showcases Schulhoff's mastery of chamber music, offering a blend of symphonies, concertos, and quartets that highlight his unique compositional voice.

The album features two of Schulhoff's symphonies, the Second and Fifth, each divided into four distinct movements that range from the energetic to the contemplative. The Second Symphony's third movement, "Scherzo alla Jazz," offers a playful nod to jazz influences, while the Fifth Symphony's opening "Andante ma molto risoluto" sets a resolute and determined tone.

In addition to the symphonies, the album includes the Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 43, a work that showcases Schulhoff's ability to blend classical forms with modern sensibilities. The concerto's third movement, "Allegro alla Jazz," once again highlights Schulhoff's affinity for jazz.

Chamber music enthusiasts will delight in the inclusion of several string quartets, including the String Quartet No. 1 and No. 2, as well as the String Quartet in G Major, Op. 25. These works offer a glimpse into Schulhoff's ability to craft intricate and expressive pieces for smaller ensembles.

The album also features the Double Concerto for Flute & Piano, Op. 63, and the Concerto for String Quartet & Wind Ensemble, both of which demonstrate Schulhoff's skill in writing for diverse instrumental combinations. The Violin Sonata and Duo for Violin & Cello further enrich the collection, offering intimate and expressive works for soloists.

Throughout the album, Schulhoff's playful and innovative spirit shines through, making this a compelling exploration of his musical legacy. Whether you're a longtime fan of chamber music or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Erwin Schulhoff

Erwin Schulhoff, born in Prague in 1894, was a pioneering Czech composer and pianist whose career was tragically cut short by the Nazi regime. A true innovator, Schulhoff was one of the first European composers to embrace jazz, incorporating dance forms like ragtime, tango, and foxtrot into his piano works. His music is known for its adventurous and muscular qualities, reflecting his wide range of influences and forward-thinking approach. Despite his premature death in the Wülzburg concentration camp in 1942, Schulhoff's compositions continue to captivate audiences with their power and variety. His legacy as a composer who was ahead of his time endures, making his music a compelling exploration of 20th-century musical evolution.
