Schulhoff: Landschaften, Op. 26, Menschheit, Op. 28 & Le Bourgeois gentilhomme - Erwin Schulhoff

      Album Details

Dive into the rich and evocative world of Erwin Schulhoff with this captivating album, released on January 1, 2016, under the Orfeo label. This chamber music collection features a blend of Schulhoff's most profound and introspective works, performed with exquisite skill by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under the direction of Gerd Albrecht.

The album showcases three distinct yet interconnected compositions: "Landschaften, Op. 26," a symphony for mezzo-soprano and orchestra based on poems by Johannes Theodor Kuhlemann; "Menschheit, Op. 28," a symphony for alto and orchestra inspired by the poetry of Theodor Däubler; and "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme," a concert suite derived from Molière's play, arranged for piano, seven wind instruments, and percussion.

"Landschaften, Op. 26" is a serene and contemplative piece, with each of its five movements offering a unique landscape of sound and mood. From the dreamy "Die Turen sind zugeweht" to the more animated "Die goldnen Winde," this work is a testament to Schulhoff's ability to paint vivid musical pictures.

"Menschheit, Op. 28" presents a more introspective side of Schulhoff, with its five movements exploring themes of humanity and existence. The performances by mezzo-soprano Doris Soffel and the orchestra are particularly noteworthy, bringing depth and nuance to each piece.

The album concludes with "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme," a lively and engaging suite that showcases Schulhoff's versatility as a composer. From the overture to the grand ballet, this work is a delightful blend of classical and contemporary elements.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 7 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Schulhoff's genius, offering both seasoned classical enthusiasts and newcomers to his work a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Erwin Schulhoff

Erwin Schulhoff, born in Prague in 1894, was a pioneering Czech composer and pianist whose career was tragically cut short by the Nazi regime. A true innovator, Schulhoff was one of the first European composers to embrace jazz, incorporating dance forms like ragtime, tango, and foxtrot into his piano works. His music is known for its adventurous and muscular qualities, reflecting his wide range of influences and forward-thinking approach. Despite his premature death in the Wülzburg concentration camp in 1942, Schulhoff's compositions continue to captivate audiences with their power and variety. His legacy as a composer who was ahead of his time endures, making his music a compelling exploration of 20th-century musical evolution.
