      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical music with Iona Brown's remarkable album, featuring two iconic symphonies that showcase the brilliance of Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn. This album, released on Naim Records in 1997, is a testament to the exceptional talent of Iona Brown, a renowned violinist and conductor celebrated for her work with chamber orchestras.

The album opens with Schubert's Symphony No. 5 in B-Flat, D. 483, a composition that exudes warmth and lyricism. The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, under Brown's expert direction, brings to life the symphony's four movements, from the lively Allegro to the spirited Allegro vivace. Schubert's mastery of melody and harmony is evident in every note, making this a delightful listen for both seasoned classical enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A, Op. 90, affectionately known as the "Italian" symphony. This piece is a vibrant tribute to Mendelssohn's experiences in Italy, capturing the essence of the country's landscapes and culture. The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra's performance is nothing short of breathtaking, with each movement—from the Allegro vivace to the Presto—painted with vivid colors and dynamic contrasts.

With a total runtime of 54 minutes, this album is a compact yet powerful journey through two of classical music's most beloved symphonies. Iona Brown's conducting is precise and expressive, guiding the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra to deliver performances that are both technically impressive and emotionally resonant. Whether you're a fan of Schubert, Mendelssohn, or simply appreciate the beauty of classical music, this album is a must-listen.
