      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with Maurice Gendron's 1957 album, "Schubert: Sonate 'Arpeggione' - Schumann: Fantasiestücke, Op. 73 & 3 Romances, Op. 94." This mono version recording showcases the exquisite talent of Maurice Gendron, a renowned cellist, accompanied by Jean Françaix on the piano. The album is a captivating blend of Schubert's and Schumann's masterpieces, offering a rich and diverse listening experience.

The album opens with Franz Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata in A Minor, D. 821, a work originally composed for the arpeggione, a now-rare instrument. Gendron's rendition, skillfully adapted for the cello, is a testament to his virtuosity and deep understanding of the piece. The sonata's three movements—Allegro moderato, Adagio, and Allegretto—exhibit Schubert's signature lyrical beauty and emotional depth.

Following the sonata, the album presents Robert Schumann's Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, a collection of three character pieces that showcase the composer's imaginative and expressive style. The pieces, titled Zart und mit Ausdruck (Tender and with expression), Lebhaft, leicht (Lively, light), and Rasch und mit Feuer (Quick and with fire), offer a delightful contrast to Schubert's more introspective works.

The album concludes with Schumann's 3 Romances, Op. 94, also adapted for cello and piano. These romances, with their gentle and intimate character, provide a serene and reflective end to the recording.

With a total duration of 43 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to the works of Schubert and Schumann, as well as a showcase of Maurice Gendron's exceptional artistry. Released under the BNF Collection label, this classical gem is a treasure trove for both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers to the genre.
