      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Franz Schubert's classical compositions with this captivating album, released on January 1, 2014, under Ancalagon LLC. Spanning a rich 79 minutes, this collection is a testament to Schubert's mastery of chamber music and classical piano, offering a diverse array of pieces that showcase his profound musicality and emotional depth.

The album opens with three of Schubert's "Gesänge des Harfners" (Songs of the Harpist), drawn from his incidental music to Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister." These songs, performed with exquisite sensitivity, are followed by the lively and engaging "Sonatina for Violin and Piano in D major, D. 384, Op. 137." This three-movement work is a delightful exploration of Schubert's ability to blend technical virtuosity with melodic charm.

The album continues with three of Schubert's impromptus from Op. 90, each a miniature masterpiece that reveals the composer's knack for blending improvisatory freedom with classical form. These are followed by the well-known "Gretchen am Spinnrade" (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), a dramatic and evocative setting of a scene from Goethe's "Faust."

The second half of the album features the "Sonata in A Minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D. 821," a work originally composed for an unusual instrument, the arpeggione, and here performed with piano. The sonata's three movements are a study in contrast, moving from the stormy intensity of the first movement to the lyrical beauty of the second and the playful energy of the third.

The album concludes with the "Piano Trio in B-Flat Major, D. 28 - 'Sonatensatz'," a single-movement work that encapsulates Schubert's ability to convey complex emotions in a concise musical form. As a bonus track, the "Ungarische Melodie, D. 817" (Hungarian Melody) adds a touch of exoticism to the collection.

This album is a celebration of Franz Schubert's enduring legacy, offering a rich and varied exploration of his chamber and piano works. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to Schubert's music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.
