      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, Romantic orchestral sounds of Franz Schmidt with the release of his Symphony No. 2 in E-Flat Major and Fuga Solemnis. This captivating album, performed by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Vassily Sinaisky and featuring the piano virtuosity of Anders Johnsson, offers a profound exploration of Schmidt's lush, late-Romantic style.

Composed with a sense of grandeur and intimacy, the Symphony No. 2 is a three-movement journey that showcases Schmidt's mastery of orchestration and his ability to evoke a wide range of emotions. The first movement, "Lebhaft," bursts with energy and vitality, while the second movement, "Allegretto con variazioni: Einfach und zart," unfolds with delicate elegance and subtle variations. The final movement, "Finale: Langsam," concludes the symphony with a solemn and reflective fugue, the Fuga Solemnis, demonstrating Schmidt's contrapuntal prowess.

Recorded in 2009 and released under the Naxos label, this album is a treasure trove for lovers of Romantic music, offering a lush and iridescent listening experience. The Malmö Symphony Orchestra's performance is both powerful and nuanced, bringing out the full depth and beauty of Schmidt's compositions. Whether you are a longtime admirer of Franz Schmidt or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to enchant and inspire.

      About Franz Schmidt

Franz Schmidt, born in Bratislava in 1874, was an Austrian composer, cellist, and pianist whose life and work bridged the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the early 20th century. A pupil of the renowned Leschetizky and Bruckner, Schmidt's musical journey began as a cellist in the Vienna Court Opera.
