Say: Violin Concerto No. 2, Op. 87 & Other Works - Fazıl Say

      Album Details

Fazıl Say, the renowned Turkish pianist and composer, presents his latest album "Say: Violin Concerto No. 2, Op. 87 & Other Works," a captivating journey through his unique musical landscape. Released on April 25, 2025, under the Naxos label, this album is a testament to Say's groundbreaking contributions to the classical genre, blending traditional and contemporary influences with his signature virtuosity.

The centerpiece of the album is the Violin Concerto No. 2, Op. 87, subtitled "Karantina günlerinde bahar sabahları" (Spring Mornings During Lockdown). Composed during the Covid-19 lockdown, this concerto captures the enchanting colors and textures of sunrises that Say observed during this period. The opening movement, a pastoral "Ballad of Aurora," paints a vivid picture of a beautiful sunrise, filled with sweeping melodies and rich harmonies. The concerto's other movements, including a lively "Dance. Fast Jazz Swing" and a meditative "Andantino tranquillo, quasi meditazione," showcase Say's versatility and innovative approach to the violin concerto form.

In addition to the Violin Concerto No. 2, the album features a selection of other works by Say, including "Leopards, Op. 103," a dynamic and rhythmical piece, and the "Sonata for Solo Violin, Op. 92c 'Ruşen Güneş Anısına'," a deeply expressive work dedicated to the memory of Ruşen Güneş. The album also includes the "String Quartet, Op. 29 'Divorce'," a three-movement work that explores themes of love and loss.

Performances on the album are led by esteemed conductors and ensembles, including Christoph Eschenbach and the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin, as well as the Gropius Quartett. Violinist Friedemann Eichhorn delivers a stunning performance of the Violin Concerto No. 2, bringing Say's evocative compositions to life with technical brilliance and emotional depth.

With a total runtime of 65 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of Fazıl Say's musical genius, from his lyrical and introspective pieces to his energetic and rhythmically complex works. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.
