Stuart Dempster is a pioneering American musician renowned for his innovative work as a trombonist, didgeridoo player, improviser, and composer. Born in Berkeley, California, in 1936, Dempster's musical journey began with studies at San Francisco State College, where he earned degrees in performance and composition. His career is marked by a deep exploration of sound and its reverberations, notably in his creation "Underground Overlays From The Cistern Chapel," recorded in the same cistern that housed the legendary "Deep Listening" album. Dempster is also celebrated for his role in the premiere performances and recordings of Terry Riley's seminal work "In C."
