      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical music with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's "Symphony in A Minor, Hiawatha's Wedding Feast." Released on February 18, 2022, by Musical Concepts, this album is a testament to the genius of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a prominent figure in the classical music scene. The album spans a total of 13 tracks, divided into two main works: the Symphony in A Minor, Op. 8, and the orchestral suite "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast," Op. 30 No. 1. The latter, premiered in 1898 when Coleridge-Taylor was just 22 years old, quickly became one of his most popular pieces, renowned for its vibrant and evocative storytelling.

The Symphony in A Minor is a powerful and passionate work, showcasing Coleridge-Taylor's mastery of orchestration and his ability to convey deep emotion through music. The four movements of the symphony offer a journey through a range of moods and themes, from the fiery intensity of the first movement to the serene beauty of the second.

"Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" is a suite of nine movements, each depicting a different scene from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem "The Song of Hiawatha." Coleridge-Taylor's music brings the poem to life with vivid imagery and a rich tapestry of sounds, from the playful and energetic to the tender and lyrical. The suite culminates in the triumphant final movement, "Such was Hiawatha's wedding," which celebrates the joyous union of Hiawatha and Minnehaha.

Conducted by Douglas Bostock and featuring the talents of Sir Malcolm Sargent, this album is a must-listen for anyone interested in classical music. The performances are impeccable, capturing the essence of Coleridge-Taylor's music and bringing it to life with passion and precision. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to delight and inspire.

      About Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, born in London in 1875, was a pioneering British composer and conductor whose music transcended racial and cultural boundaries. Of mixed-race heritage, with an English mother and a Creole father from Sierra Leone, Coleridge-Taylor's work was deeply influenced by both European classical traditions and African melodies. He gained international acclaim for his three cantatas based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem 'The Song of Hiawatha', with the first section premiering when he was just 23. Often hailed as the "African Mahler," his compositions, including the Violin Concerto in G minor, reflect his unique blend of musical styles and cultural influences. Despite facing personal struggles, including poverty and tragedy, Coleridge-Taylor's legacy endures as a testament to his musical genius and his impact on the classical music landscape.
