      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Aulis Sallinen's "Symphony No. 6 / Cello Concerto, Op. 44," a masterful blend of orchestral and solo cello performances that showcases the Finnish composer's distinctive voice. Released on May 19, 2010, by CPO, this album is a testament to Sallinen's ability to craft intricate, evocative compositions that resonate with depth and emotion.

The album begins with Symphony No. 6, Op. 65, subtitled "from a New Zealand Diary," a four-movement work inspired by the composer's experiences in New Zealand. Each movement paints a vivid sonic landscape, from the serene "The Islands of the Sounds" to the dynamic "Finale," which quotes the poet Allen Curnow. The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ari Rasilainen, brings these landscapes to life with precision and passion.

The second half of the album features the Cello Concerto, Op. 44, performed by the virtuoso Jan-Erik Gustafsson. This two-movement concerto is a showcase for the cello, with its lyrical melodies and technical demands. Gustafsson's performance is nothing short of breathtaking, accompanied by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under Rasilainen's direction.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 5 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding listen, offering a rich exploration of Sallinen's musical language. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen, born in 1935 in Salmi, Finland, is a renowned composer whose music seamlessly blends Finnish national elements with contemporary techniques. His journey into composition began almost serendipitously, with his first mature work penned in protest during a trip to Germany in 1962. Sallinen's education at the Sibelius Academy from 1955 to 1960 laid a strong foundation, but his style evolved beyond the tonal music he initially composed to please his teachers. His reputation is particularly marked by his operas, with "The Red Line" and "The Horseman" standing out as notable works. Sallinen's compositions, such as "The Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" and "Lemminki in Pohjola," reflect his unique voice and have earned him international acclaim. His most recent project, "The Iron Age," showcases his ongoing innovation and depth as a composer.
