Sallinen, A.: Symphonies Nos. 3 and 5 - Aulis Sallinen

      Album Details

Dive into the captivating world of Aulis Sallinen, one of Finland's most renowned composers, with his compelling album "Symphonies Nos. 3 and 5." Released in 2008 under the CPO label, this album showcases two of Sallinen's most celebrated orchestral works, spanning a total of eight tracks and a duration of one hour and two minutes.

The album opens with Symphony No. 3, Op. 35, a piece composed between 1974 and 1975. This symphony is a testament to Sallinen's ability to blend Finnish musical traditions with contemporary influences, creating a sound that is both familiar and innovative. The three movements of the symphony—"Il tempo energico e sostenuto," "Chaconne," and "Vivace - Giocoso - Finale"—each offer a unique exploration of orchestral color and texture.

The second half of the album features Symphony No. 5, Op. 57, subtitled "Washington Mosaics." This symphony was written specifically for the National Symphony Orchestra and dedicated to their then-conductor, Mstislav Rostropovich. The five movements of this symphony—"Washington Mosaics I," "Intermezzo I," "Intermezzo II," "Intermezzo III," and "Washington Mosaics II"—paint a vivid musical portrait of the city of Washington, D.C., with its diverse cultural and historical influences.

Throughout the album, Sallinen's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create compelling musical narratives are on full display. Whether you're a longtime fan of Sallinen's work or a newcomer to his music, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen, born in 1935 in Salmi, Finland, is a renowned composer whose music seamlessly blends Finnish national elements with contemporary techniques. His journey into composition began almost serendipitously, with his first mature work penned in protest during a trip to Germany in 1962. Sallinen's education at the Sibelius Academy from 1955 to 1960 laid a strong foundation, but his style evolved beyond the tonal music he initially composed to please his teachers. His reputation is particularly marked by his operas, with "The Red Line" and "The Horseman" standing out as notable works. Sallinen's compositions, such as "The Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" and "Lemminki in Pohjola," reflect his unique voice and have earned him international acclaim. His most recent project, "The Iron Age," showcases his ongoing innovation and depth as a composer.
