      Album Details

Dive into the profound and evocative world of Aulis Sallinen with this captivating album, which masterfully blends two of his most significant works. "Songs of Life and Death," Op. 69, is a deeply personal and introspective song cycle that Sallinen dedicated to his departed loved ones. This modern take on the traditional Requiem explores themes of life, death, and the human condition through eight powerful vocal pieces, each offering a unique perspective on the cycle of existence.

Complementing this intimate collection is "The Iron Age Suite," Op. 55, a suite inspired by the Kalevala, the national epic of Finland. This seven-movement orchestral work transports listeners to the mythical world of ancient Finland, bringing to life tales of heroes, gods, and magical creatures. From the joyous "Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" to the dramatic "Lemminki in Tuonela," each piece is a testament to Sallinen's compositional prowess and his deep connection to Finnish folklore.

Recorded in 1995, this album features the exceptional talents of the Opera Festival Chorus, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and conductor Okko Kamu, with renowned baritone Jorma Hynninen delivering a stirring performance in the song cycle. The album's duration of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes offers a rich and immersive experience, showcasing the breadth of Sallinen's musical language and his ability to evoke a wide range of emotions.

Whether you're a longtime admirer of Sallinen's work or a newcomer to his music, this album is an excellent introduction to the composer's unique voice and his enduring contributions to the classical music canon. The album's stunning performances and meticulous production make it a standout addition to any classical music collection.

      About Aulis Sallinen

Aulis Sallinen, born in 1935 in Salmi, Finland, is a renowned composer whose music seamlessly blends Finnish national elements with contemporary techniques. His journey into composition began almost serendipitously, with his first mature work penned in protest during a trip to Germany in 1962. Sallinen's education at the Sibelius Academy from 1955 to 1960 laid a strong foundation, but his style evolved beyond the tonal music he initially composed to please his teachers. His reputation is particularly marked by his operas, with "The Red Line" and "The Horseman" standing out as notable works. Sallinen's compositions, such as "The Wedding Procession of Ilmari and the Golden Woman" and "Lemminki in Pohjola," reflect his unique voice and have earned him international acclaim. His most recent project, "The Iron Age," showcases his ongoing innovation and depth as a composer.
