      Album Details

Edmund Rubbra's "Violin Sonatas Nos. 1, 2 & 3" is a captivating collection of works that showcases the composer's mastery of the violin and piano duo. Released on October 25, 1999, under the Dutton Epoch label, this album presents a comprehensive journey through Rubbra's sonatas, offering a rich tapestry of musical expression.

The album opens with the Sonata No. 1 for Violin & Piano, Op. 11, a piece that immediately draws the audience in with its lively "Allegro Con Spirito." The second movement, "Romance. Lento ma non troppo," provides a stark contrast with its slow, melodic beauty, while the third movement, "Fugal Rondo. Allegretto moderato pesante," brings a sense of playfulness and complexity.

Following this, the Four Pieces for Violin & Piano, Op. 29, offer a delightful interlude. Each piece, from the gentle "Cradle Song" to the spirited "Rondel," demonstrates Rubbra's versatility and ability to evoke a range of emotions.

The Sonata No. 2 for Violin & Piano, Op. 31, continues the journey with its dynamic "Allegretto liberamente e scorrevole" and the deeply moving "Lament. Lento e dolente." The final movement, "Allegro vivo e feroce," is a tour de force of energy and passion.

The album concludes with the Sonata No. 3 for Violin & Piano, Op. 133, a work that showcases Rubbra's mature style. The "Allegro" opens with a sense of urgency, while the "Andante poco lento e mesto" offers a moment of reflection. The final movement, "Tema con variazioni," is a testament to Rubbra's skill in thematic development and variation.

With a total duration of 57 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to Edmund Rubbra's violin sonatas, offering a blend of technical brilliance and emotional depth. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this collection is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
