      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich orchestral tapestry of Edmund Rubbra's symphonic works with this captivating album, featuring the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the baton of Richard Hickox. Released in 1999 on the prestigious Chandos label, this collection showcases Rubbra's mastery of the symphonic form, offering a profound and engaging listening experience.

The album presents two of Rubbra's most significant symphonies: the powerful and dynamic Symphony No. 5, Op. 63, and the introspective and spiritually charged Symphony No. 8, Op. 132, "Hommage à Teilhard de Chardin." Each symphony is a journey in itself, with Rubbra's distinctive voice and intricate compositions revealing a depth of emotion and complexity that is sure to captivate classical music enthusiasts.

In addition to the symphonies, the album also includes the enchanting Ode to the Queen, Op. 83, a choral work that features the stunning mezzo-soprano vocals of Susan Bickley. This piece adds a vocal dimension to the album, providing a beautiful contrast to the purely orchestral works.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 4 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding exploration of Rubbra's musical genius. The combination of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales' exceptional performance and Richard Hickox's insightful conducting brings Rubbra's compositions to life, making this a standout release in the world of classical music. Whether you are a longtime admirer of Rubbra's work or a newcomer to his music, this album offers a compelling and enriching experience.

      About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
