      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich symphonic world of Edmund Rubbra with this captivating album, featuring three of his most profound works: Symphony No. 4, Op. 53, Symphony No. 10, Op. 145, "Sinfonia da Camera," and Symphony No. 11, Op. 153. Recorded in 1995 by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the skilled direction of Richard Hickox, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of Rubbra's later symphonic output.

The Fourth Symphony, Op. 53, is a masterclass in thematic development, with Rubbra skillfully weaving two primary ideas throughout its four movements. The first movement, "Con moto," introduces the listener to the symphony's central motifs, while the "Intermezzo" and the two-part third movement offer moments of introspection and grandeur. The Tenth Symphony, Op. 145, nicknamed "Sinfonia da Camera," is a more intimate affair, with its four movements showcasing Rubbra's ability to create intricate, chamber-like textures within a full orchestral setting. The Eleventh Symphony, Op. 153, completes the album, demonstrating Rubbra's continued evolution as a symphonist.

Spanning a total of 58 minutes, this album is a testament to Rubbra's unique voice in the symphonic tradition. Whether you're a longtime admirer of Rubbra's work or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to provide a rewarding and engaging listening experience. The Chandos label has ensured high-quality recording and presentation, making this a valuable addition to any classical music collection.

      About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
