      Album Details

Edmund Rubbra's "Symphony No. 1, A Tribute & Sinfonia Concertante" is a captivating journey through the composer's evocative and richly textured musical landscape. Released in 1997 under the Chandos label, this album showcases Rubbra's mastery of orchestral and concertante forms, offering a compelling exploration of his distinctive voice in classical music.

The album opens with Rubbra's Symphony No. 1, Op. 44, a three-movement work that unfolds with dramatic intensity and lyrical beauty. The first movement, "Allegro moderato e tempestoso," sets a stormy and impassioned tone, while the second movement, "Perigourdine. Allegro bucolico e giocoso," brings a playful and pastoral charm. The third movement, "Lento," concludes the symphony with a serene and contemplative finale.

"A Tribute, Op. 56," follows, offering a poignant and reflective interlude that highlights Rubbra's ability to convey deep emotion through his music.

The album concludes with the Sinfonia Concertante, Op. 38, a three-movement work that features the piano prominently. The first movement, "Fantasia. Lento con molto tubato," begins with a slow and expressive introduction, while the second movement, "Saltarella. Allegro vivace," brings a lively and energetic dance-like quality. The final movement, "Prelude and Fugue. Lento," concludes the album with a complex and intellectually stimulating finale.

Performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the direction of Richard Hickox, with Howard Shelley on piano, this album is a testament to Rubbra's enduring legacy and the skill of the performers. With a total duration of 1 hour and 11 minutes, it is a substantial and rewarding listening experience for fans of classical music.

      About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
