      Album Details

Edmund Rubbra's "Rubbra: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4, A Tribute & Resurgam" is a captivating exploration of the composer's spiritual and philosophical depth, released on September 1, 2006, by Lyrita. This album showcases Rubbra's unique ability to blend Western classical traditions with influences from Eastern thought, creating a sound that is both familiar and profoundly innovative.

The album features two complete symphonies, the Third and Fourth, along with two standalone pieces, "A Tribute for Ralph Vaughan Williams" and "Resurgam." The Third Symphony, Op. 49, is a four-movement work that begins with a Moderato, followed by an Allegro, a Molto adagio ma liberamente, and concludes with a Tema con 7 variazioni e una fuga. The Fourth Symphony, Op. 53, is structured in three parts: Con moto, Intermezzo. Allegretto gracioso, and a two-part finale, Introduzione. Grave e molto calmo leading into an Allegro maestoso.

Rubbra's music is known for its introspective and meditative qualities, and this album is no exception. The Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Norman Del Mar, brings out the subtle nuances and rich harmonies of Rubbra's compositions, making this a compelling listen for anyone interested in classical music that pushes boundaries and explores the spiritual dimensions of sound. With a total duration of 1 hour and 12 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding journey through the mind and soul of one of the 20th century's most intriguing composers.

      About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
