      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Julius Röntgen's early 20th-century compositions with "Works for Violin & Piano, Vol. 1." This album, released in 2016 by CPO, showcases the German-Dutch composer's mastery of the violin and piano duo, offering a rich tapestry of musical expression that spans a variety of moods and styles.

The album opens with the Violin Sonata in E Major, Op. 40, a four-movement work that demonstrates Röntgen's ability to blend lyrical melodies with intricate technical demands. The Phantasie, Op. 24, follows, offering a more introspective exploration of the instruments' capabilities. The Sonata Trilogica, with its three contrasting movements, further highlights Röntgen's versatility, while the 7 Vortragsstücke, Op. 89, provides a delightful suite of character pieces, each with its own unique charm.

Performed by Christoph Schickedanz on violin and Ernst Breidenbach on piano, this recording is a testament to the musicians' deep understanding of Röntgen's style and their ability to bring his works to life. With a total duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, the album offers a comprehensive journey through Röntgen's violin and piano repertoire, making it an essential addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection.

      About Julius Röntgen

Julius Röntgen, a German-Dutch composer of classical music, was a prolific artist with a vast body of work spanning nearly every genre. Born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1855, Röntgen's music is deeply rooted in romanticism, yet his 18th Symphony, composed in the early 1930s, showcases a resolutely tonal melody with a neo-baroque formal cast. With around 650 compositions to his name, Röntgen's symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and songs reflect his enduring influence in the classical music world. A friend of Liszt, Brahms, and Grieg, Röntgen's legacy continues to captivate audiences and musicians alike.
