      Album Details

Dive into the rich tapestry of Swiss late-Romantic opera with Richard Flury's "Casanova e l'Albertolli," a captivating work that blends the elegance of Italian bel canto with the vibrant spirit of Swiss Festspiel. This 1937 opera, the third of Flury's four operatic compositions, is a delightful fusion of high art and popular culture, offering a unique listening experience that spans nearly two hours.

Conducted by the renowned Diego Fasolis and performed by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, this recording brings to life the comedic intrigues and lush melodies that characterize Flury's style. The opera, designated as a "Commedia lirica," is filled with Puccini-esque tunes that dance and weave through the narrative, creating a musical journey that is both entertaining and deeply engaging.

The album features a sprawling tracklist of 59 pieces, including overtures, recitatives, arias, duets, and choruses, each contributing to the operatic drama. From the lively "Overture: Allegro" to the tender "Romanza: ‘Lasciate che vi adori’" and the dramatic "Terzetto: ‘Come colomba’," every track is a testament to Flury's mastery of composition.

"Casanova e l'Albertolli" is not just an opera; it's an exploration of two distinct musical traditions coming together in harmony. The blend of Italian operatic flair and Swiss folk elements results in a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly new. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a rich and rewarding experience.

Released on February 7, 2025, by Toccata Classics, this double-CD set is a treasure trove of musical delights. The album's duration of 1 hour and 41 minutes ensures that listeners can fully immerse themselves in the world that Richard Flury has created. With a stellar cast of performers, including Carlo Allemano, Lavinia Bini, and the Coro della Radiotelevisione Svizzera, this recording is a celebration of Flury's enduring legacy and a testament to the timeless appeal of his music.

      About Richard Flury

Richard Flury, born in the quaint Swiss town of Biberist in 1896, was a prolific composer and conductor whose musical journey was as rich and varied as the landscapes of his homeland. Flury's early exposure to music came from his restaurateur father, an accomplished amateur trumpeter, igniting a lifelong passion for composition and performance. His formal training spanned Switzerland and Austria, studying under notable figures such as Hans Huber and Joseph Marx.

Flury's compositional output is vast, encompassing over 200 secular works across all genres. His neo-Romantic style, marked by unexpected rhythmic developments, is evident in his three operas, seven symphonies, and numerous concertos. Among his notable works are the opera "Casanova e l'Abertolli" and the "Symphony No. 1 in D-minor," showcasing his mastery of orchestration and dramatic storytelling.

As a conductor, Flury led the Solothurn City Orchestra for three decades and was deeply involved in the local music scene, conducting various orchestras and choirs, and even performing in dance bands. His dedication to music education was equally impressive, teaching at the Solothurn Canton School for over 30 years.

Flury's legacy endures through his extensive body of work, which continues to captivate audiences with its emotional depth and technical brilliance. His music offers a window into the soul of a composer who was as much a part of his community as he was a visionary on the global stage.
