      Album Details

Dive into the rich, swinging sounds of Chico Hamilton's "Revelation," a stellar collection that celebrates the legendary jazz artist's 90th birthday and marks his 60th album to date. Released on September 27, 2011, via Joyous Shout!, this album is a testament to Hamilton's enduring talent and innovation, spanning a diverse range of styles within the jazz genre, including cool jazz, jazz funk, and hard bop.

"Revelation" is a vibrant journey through 22 tracks, each offering a unique blend of Hamilton's signature cool jazz and his exploration into jazz funk and hard bop. The album kicks off with "Brushes," setting the tone for an hour and seventeen minutes of pure musical delight. Standout tracks like "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" showcase Hamilton's mastery of the genre, while tracks like "Evanly" and "Gena" offer a more introspective and melodic side.

The album also includes a cover of Duke Ellington's classic "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," adding a touch of nostalgia and paying homage to the jazz greats. "Revelation" is not just an album; it's a celebration of Chico Hamilton's incredible career and his continued influence on the jazz world. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Hamilton's music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Chico Hamilton

Chico Hamilton, born Foreststorn Hamilton, was a pioneering figure in the jazz world, renowned for his subtle and creative drumming and his innovative approach as a bandleader. Emerging from the vibrant jazz scene of Los Angeles, Hamilton gained prominence as a sideman for legendary artists such as Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, and Lena Horne. His most notable contributions came as a bandleader, where he fearlessly experimented with unique instrumentation, notably featuring the cello in his quintet during the 1950s—a bold move that set him apart in the jazz landscape.

Throughout his career, Hamilton's bands traversed a wide range of styles, from cool jazz and post-bop to jazz fusion, always pushing the boundaries of what jazz could be. His ability to discover and nurture talented newcomers further cemented his status as a visionary in the genre. Hamilton's legacy endures not just through his recordings but also through his influence on generations of musicians, making him a true jazz legend.
