      Album Details

Experience the raw, unfiltered genius of Sam Rivers in "Reunion: Live in New York," a captivating live album that captures the legendary saxophonist, flutist, and pianist in a spontaneous, improvised performance. Recorded live at Miller Theatre at Columbia University on March 25, 2007, this album is a testament to Rivers' mastery of free jazz, hard bop, and avant-garde styles, showcasing his unique ability to blend structure and spontaneity.

Joined by the incomparable Dave Holland on bass and Barry Altschul on drums, Rivers delivers two continuous, fully improvised sets that span over an hour and a half. The album is divided into nine tracks, each representing a segment of these mesmerizing performances. From the opening notes of "First Set, Pt. 1 - Live" to the final bars of "Second Set, Pt. 4 - Live," the music unfolds in an orderly yet unpredictable fashion, with Rivers moving seamlessly between tenor saxophone, flute, and piano.

"Reunion: Live in New York" is not just a recording; it's a snapshot of a historic moment in jazz history. The chemistry between Rivers, Holland, and Altschul is palpable, as they navigate the complexities of improvisation with ease and precision. The album was mixed and mastered in June 2012 at Cumberland Studio in Brooklyn, NY, ensuring that the live energy and spontaneity of the performance are preserved in every detail. Released on Pi Recordings, this album is a essential addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process of one of the genre's most innovative musicians.
