      Album Details

Dive into the rich, late-Romantic soundscapes of Max Reger with this captivating album, released on CPO on July 10, 2020. The album showcases two of Reger's most significant chamber works: the Clarinet Quintet in A Major, Op. 146, and the String Sextet in F Major, Op. 118. These pieces, composed in 1916 and 1910 respectively, exemplify Reger's mastery of counterpoint and his ability to blend German Romanticism with modernist tendencies.

The Clarinet Quintet, performed by the renowned clarinetist Thorsten Johanns and the Diogenes Quartet, is a journey through four distinct movements. From the tender "Moderato ed amabile" to the lively "Vivace," the introspective "Largo," and the playful "Poco allegretto," the quintet offers a diverse palette of emotions and musical textures. The String Sextet, featuring the Diogenes Quartet alongside Roland Glassl on viola and Wen-Sinn Yang on cello, is equally compelling. Its four movements, ranging from the energetic "Allegro energico" to the deeply expressive "Largo con gran espressivo," demonstrate Reger's profound understanding of ensemble writing.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, this album is a testament to Reger's enduring influence on classical music. Whether you're a longtime fan of Reger's work or a newcomer to his compositions, this album offers a rewarding exploration of his chamber music repertoire.

      About Max Reger

Max Reger, born Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger in 1873, was a towering figure in German music, straddling the late Romantic and early Modernist eras. A prolific composer, pianist, organist, and conductor, Reger's music is renowned for its complexity and emotional depth, particularly his monumental fugues and organ works. Born in Brand, Bavaria, Reger's musical journey began under the tutelage of his parents and the local organist, leading him to become one of the most significant composers of organ music since Bach. His compositions, which include magnificent chorale-based and free works, reflect both the grandeur of German Romanticism and the innovative spirit of Modernism. Reger's legacy endures, celebrated by figures such as Paul Hindemith and Arnold Schoenberg, and his music continues to captivate audiences with its structural coherence and emotional resonance.
