Growing up in Västerås, Stenson's interest in jazz was sparked by his drummer brother, leading him to perform with local musicians and eventually join Börje Fredriksson's quartet.
Stenson's international career took off in the 1960s when he collaborated with legendary American jazz artists like Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Charles Lloyd. His breakthrough as a leader came in 1971 with the release of "Underwear," the first of many albums on the prestigious ECM label.
