      Album Details

In celebration of his 70th birthday, Charles Lloyd, the legendary saxophonist and flutist, gifts us with "Rabo De Nube," a captivating live album recorded in Basel, Switzerland, on April 27, 2007. This album is a testament to Lloyd's enduring brilliance and his ability to lead exceptional bands, even decades into his career. The Charles Lloyd Quartet, featuring the dynamic Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums, delivers a phenomenal set that seamlessly blends free jazz, hard bop, and contemporary jazz elements.

"Rabo De Nube" is a vibrant showcase of the quartet's chemistry and individual virtuosity. The album opens with "Prometheus - Live," setting the stage for an intense and spirited performance. Tracks like "Migration Of Spirit - Live" and "Booker's Garden - Live" highlight the quartet's ability to explore complex compositions with both depth and agility. Moran's percussive piano playing, reminiscent of Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, adds a fiery energy to the set, while Lloyd's saxophone and flute work soar with lyrical grace and emotional resonance.

The album's title track, "Rabo De Nube - Live," translates to "Tail of the Cloud" in Spanish, evoking a sense of poetic beauty and fluidity. This piece, along with others like "La Colline De Monk - Live" and "Sweet Georgia Bright - Live," demonstrates the quartet's ability to reappraise and transform familiar material into something fresh and exhilarating. The live setting captures the raw energy and spontaneity of the performance, making it a thrilling listen from start to finish.

With a duration of over an hour and fifteen minutes, "Rabo De Nube" is a substantial and immersive experience. It's a celebration of Charles Lloyd's enduring legacy and his continued ability to push the boundaries of jazz. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to his music, this album is a powerful reminder of why Lloyd remains one of the most respected and influential figures in jazz.
