      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless artistry of Dennis Brain with this exceptional collection of horn concertos. This album showcases Brain's unparalleled mastery of the horn, featuring Richard Strauss' Horn Concerto No. 1 and No. 2, as well as Paul Hindemith's Horn Concerto and Concert Music Op. 50. Recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of Wolfgang Sawallisch, these performances capture the essence of Brain's virtuosic technique and deep musicality.

The album opens with Strauss' Horn Concerto No. 1, a work that highlights the horn's lyrical and expressive capabilities. Brain's playing is both tender and powerful, bringing out the rich harmonies and intricate melodies of Strauss' composition. The second concerto by Strauss is equally impressive, with Brain's precise and dynamic playing showcasing the full range of the horn's capabilities.

Hindemith's Horn Concerto is a more modern and complex work, but Brain navigates its challenging passages with ease. The Concert Music Op. 50 is a tour de force, with Brain's playing displaying a remarkable range of dynamics and expression.

This 2002 digital remaster brings new clarity and depth to these classic recordings, allowing listeners to appreciate the full brilliance of Dennis Brain's performances. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is a testament to the enduring power of great music and the artistry of one of the most celebrated horn players of all time.

      About Dennis Brain

Dennis Brain, born in London in 1921, was a British horn player whose meteoric rise in the music world left an indelible mark despite his tragically short life. Hailing from a family of horn players, Dennis Brain's musical journey began at the Royal Academy of Music in London. His career soared post-World War II, serving as the principal horn for both the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic orchestras. Brain's virtuosity and innovative approach brought the French horn into the spotlight, inspiring generations of musicians and music enthusiasts alike. His recordings and performances are celebrated for their technical brilliance and emotional depth, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest horn players of the 20th century. Tragically, his life was cut short in a car accident at the age of 36, but his influence endures, making him a timeless figure in the world of classical music.
