      Quiver - Ralph Alessi

      Album Details

"Quiver," the second ECM release from trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi, is a captivating journey into the world of contemporary jazz. Released on February 19, 2016, this album showcases Alessi's evocative compositions and the exceptional interplay within his quartet, featuring Gary Versace on piano, Drew Gress on double bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums.

Recorded in September 2014 at Rainbow Studio in Oslo, "Quiver" is a testament to the intimate and reflective atmosphere captured during the sessions. The album opens with "Here Tomorrow," setting the tone for a collection that is both introspective and dynamic. Tracks like "Window Goodbyes" and "Smooth Descent" highlight Alessi's ability to convey deep emotion and imagery through his music, with the former inspired by the poignant scene of his pre-school daughter waving goodbye through a window.

The album's ten tracks, including standout pieces like "Heist," "Gone Today, Here Tomorrow," and the title track "Quiver," demonstrate Alessi's mastery of free jazz and his knack for blending lyrical melodies with complex rhythms. The quartet's chemistry is palpable, with each member contributing to the rich tapestry of sounds that define "Quiver."

Produced by Manfred Eicher and engineered by Jan Erik Kongshaug, the album benefits from ECM's signature production quality, ensuring a listening experience that is both immersive and nuanced. "Quiver" is a compelling addition to Ralph Alessi's discography, offering a deep dive into the world of modern jazz and the creative genius of its leader.
