      About Sabir Mateen

      Sabir Mateen is a pioneering figure in the world of avant-garde jazz, hailing from the vibrant music scene of Philadelphia. Born on April 16, 1951, Mateen's journey began as a percussionist before he picked up the flute as a teenager, eventually mastering the tenor and alto saxophone, as well as the B♭ and alto clarinet. His music is a testament to his deep-rooted passion and extensive experience, having performed and recorded with legendary musicians such as Cecil Taylor. Mateen is known for his intense and impassioned performances, often described as tough yet coherent and highly skilled. He is a member of the renowned band TEST, alongside Daniel Carter, and has been a key figure in various other ensembles, including William Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra and The Other Other Quartet. Mateen's discography, though not extensive as a leader, showcases his unique voice and innovative approach to free jazz, making each of his releases a must-explore for enthusiasts of the genre.
