His journey began in the rural landscapes of Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima, where he developed a deep appreciation for music, influenced by the American records he collected as a student. Kikuchi's career spanned decades and continents, with notable collaborations in both Japan and the United States. He worked with jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and Gil Evans, and formed a long-standing musical partnership with drummer Paul Motian.
