      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the sacred and hauntingly beautiful compositions of Pierre de la Rue with "Sacred Works, Vol. 1." Released on January 19, 2015, under the Noël Akchoté label, this album is a profound exploration of medieval choral music, specifically the requiem genre. Spanning a duration of 56 minutes, the album features a meticulously arranged collection of pieces for guitar, showcasing the intricate and devotional works of one of the most renowned composers of the Renaissance period.

The album opens with the Missa pro defunctis, a moving and solemn requiem mass, followed by a series of sacred motets and choral works that highlight de la Rue's mastery of polyphonic composition. Each track, from the somber "Introitus" to the reflective "Agnus Dei" and the communal "Laudate Dominum, omnes gentes," offers a glimpse into the spiritual depth and artistic brilliance of the era.

Pierre de la Rue, a prominent figure in the Franco-Flemish school of composers, brings a sense of timelessness and reverence to these sacred works. His compositions, characterized by their rich harmonies and expressive melodies, are rendered with exquisite sensitivity in these guitar arrangements. Whether you are a devotee of medieval music or a newcomer to the genre, this album provides a captivating journey through the sacred repertoire of the Renaissance, offering both spiritual solace and aesthetic pleasure.

      About Pierre de la Rue

Pierre de la Rue, born around 1460, was a renowned Franco-Flemish composer and singer of the Renaissance, celebrated for his significant contributions to the polyphonic style that flourished in the Netherlands around 1500. A contemporary of the legendary Josquin des Prez, de la Rue's music was highly prized at the Habsburg-Burgundian court, where he served as the pre-eminent composer under Duke Philip 'the Fair' of Burgundy. His compositions, which include the influential 'Missa pro defunctis' — one of the earliest polyphonic settings of the requiem — showcase his mastery of choral and sacred music. De la Rue's work is a testament to the rich musical heritage of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, making him a pivotal figure in the history of Renaissance music.
