      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Gabriel Pierné's orchestral works with this captivating second volume, released on September 1, 2015, under the prestigious Chandos label. This collection, spanning a little over an hour, showcases Pierné's mastery of chamber music and neoclassical genres, offering a delightful journey through his evocative compositions.

The album opens with the three movements of "Paysages franciscains, Op. 43," each painting a vivid sonic landscape inspired by the serene beauty of Franciscan sites. The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Juanjo Mena, brings these scenes to life with exquisite nuance and precision. Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet joins the ensemble for a sensitive rendering of the "Nocturne en forme de valse" from "3 Pieces formant suite de concert, Op. 40," showcasing his renowned skill with the French repertoire.

Highlights include the atmospheric "Les Cathédrales: Prelude (Version without Chorus)," a piece that captures the grandeur and solemnity of its namesake structures, and the lively "Scherzo-Caprice, Op. 25," which demonstrates Pierné's flair for rhythmic vitality and orchestral color. The album also features the introspective "Poeme symphonique, Op. 37" and the playful "Fantaisie-Ballet, Op. 6," offering a diverse exploration of Pierné's creative range.

Critics have praised this collection as a "pleasantly fluent" and "wonderfully fluid" exploration of French late romanticism, making it an essential addition to any classical music enthusiast's library. Whether you're a longtime admirer of Pierné or a newcomer to his work, this album promises a rewarding and engaging listening experience.
