After his family relocated to Paris following the Franco-Prussian War, Pierné studied at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire, where he excelled in solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint, and fugue, earning top honors in each. His talent was further recognized when he won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1882 with his cantata "Edith." Pierné's teachers included notable figures such as Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, and the renowned César Franck.
