      Album Details

Kirill Gerstein, a renowned pianist known for his technical prowess and interpretive depth, presents a captivating recital that spans centuries and styles. Released in 2003 under the Oehms Classics label, this album is a testament to Gerstein's versatility and mastery of the piano.

The album opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's Keyboard Partita No. 4 in D Major, BWV 828, a Baroque masterpiece that showcases Gerstein's ability to bring clarity and precision to intricate compositions. The suite's seven movements, from the stately Ouverture to the lively Gigue, demonstrate Bach's contrapuntal genius and Gerstein's command of the keyboard.

The program then shifts to Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 10 No. 1. This sonata, with its dramatic contrasts and innovative structure, highlights Gerstein's dynamic range and expressive sensitivity. The Allegro molto e con brio, Adagio molto, and Finale. Prestissimo movements each present unique challenges that Gerstein navigates with aplomb.

The second half of the album explores the works of Alexander Scriabin, a composer known for his mysticism and harmonic adventurousness. Gerstein performs a selection of Scriabin's Études, Op. 8 and Op. 65, pieces that demand both technical virtuosity and emotional depth. The listener is treated to a range of moods and textures, from the tempestuous No. 3 in B Minor to the playful No. 4 in B Major.

The album concludes with two virtuosic arrangements of George Gershwin tunes by Earl Wild. These pieces, "Embraceable You" and "Liza," showcase Gerstein's ability to infuse classical technique with jazz sensibilities, creating a unique and engaging listening experience.

Throughout the album, Kirill Gerstein's playing is characterized by a keen musical intelligence and a deep respect for the composers' intentions. His performances are both technically impressive and emotionally resonant, making this recital a standout in his discography. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.
