      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and evocative world of Hans Pfitzner's "Von Deutscher Seele," a monumental cantata that encapsulates the essence of 19th-century German Romanticism. Released on October 27, 2008, this intense and dark-hued work is a powerfully impressive achievement, spanning a duration of 1 hour and 35 minutes. The album features the esteemed Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the Berlin Radio Chorus, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, with vocal performances by Christopher Ventris, Nathalie Stutzmann, Robert Holl, and Solveig Kringelborn.

"Von Deutscher Seele" is a panoramic exploration of German Romanticism, set to poems by Joseph von Eichendorff. The cantata is divided into three parts, each offering a unique blend of orchestral and vocal artistry. From the hauntingly beautiful "Es geht wohl anders als du meinst" to the triumphant "Schlussgesang: Wenn die Wogen unten toben," each track is a testament to Pfitzner's mastery of composition and his deep connection to the Romantic spirit.

This album is not just a collection of songs but a journey through the landscapes and emotions of German Romanticism. The intricate orchestration and powerful vocal performances bring to life the poetic imagery and emotional depth of Eichendorff's verses. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Von Deutscher Seele" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that showcases the timeless beauty of Pfitzner's music.

      About Hans Pfitzner

Hans Pfitzner, a German composer born in Moscow in 1869, was a staunch defender of traditional German music and culture, positioning himself as an anti-modernist throughout his career. His most renowned work, the post-Romantic opera "Palestrina," showcases his commitment to upholding traditional ideals well into the 20th century. Pfitzner's contributions to the orchestral and chamber music repertoire are also notable, including concertos for violin, piano, and cello, a symphony, and three string quartets. His first stage work, "Arme Heinrich," premiered in Mainz, and his career took him through teaching and conducting roles in Berlin before settling in Munich in 1906. Pfitzner's music offers a rich, romantic journey through the heart of German musical tradition.
